RECOMMENDATION

Adopt a resolution which ratifies a proclamation declaring a local emergency due to storm damage which occurred in the unincorporated area of Shasta County during January 2017.

DISCUSSION

On January 19, 2017, the Shasta County Director of the Office of Emergency Services proclaimed the existence of a local emergency due to storm damage.  The request is for the Board to ratify the proclamation by adopting a resolution, which also requests the Governor to proclaim a state of emergency.  The Board's ratification of the Proclamation of Local Emergency will enable the County and other local governments to request State and Federal assistance under the State and Federal Disaster Assistance Programs if State and Federal Proclamations are issued; allow the Director of Emergency Services (or authorized official) to take preventative measures necessary to protect and preserve public health and safety; and enhance legal protection for government entities, agencies, and employees with respect to emergency decisions and actions.

ALTERNATIVES

The Board may suggest modifications to the resolution.

OTHER AGENCY INVOLVEMENT

The Department of Public Works and Sheriff’s Office collaborated on the recommendation.  The County Administrative Office has reviewed this recommendation.

FINANCING

There is no additional General Fund impact associated with approving the resolution.  Additional assessments will be conducted to determine whether costs associated with mitigating storm damage will require County funds.
