Government Code section 31000.1 authorizes the Board of Supervisors to establish commissions of citizens to study problems of general interest and to make reports and recommendations to the Board. Pursuant to that authority, the Board of Supervisors established the eight-member Shasta County Commission on Aging (Commission) via Resolution No. 77-284.
The Commission makes recommendations to the Board of Supervisors on matters affecting senior citizens (health, nutrition, education, employment, housing, transportation, recreation, finance, etc).
Pursuant to Commission Bylaws, Article III, Section 1, five members are appointed by the Board of Supervisors, one from each supervisorial district. The cities of Anderson, Redding, and Shasta Lake appoint one member each. Members are appointed for two-year terms. Members appointed from Supervisorial Districts 1 and 5 expire in even-numbered years, while members from Supervisorial Districts 2, 3, and 4 expire in odd-numbered years.
New terms for Supervisors' appointees from Districts 2, 3, and 4 begin in January 2023. The previous District 1 representative resigned from the position in November 2022. The District 1 Supervisor has nominated Carolyn Gomes to a term to expire January 8, 2024.
